Plaiting Bands

Ideal For manes and tails

There are many reasons why you would plait a horse, mainly for showing or for a dressage competition. Firstly I would separate the mane into even sections with the total number of sections on the mane being an un-even number.

Make sure you have enough bands and a short toothed pulling comb.

How to do it

1. Divide the mane into small sections. Do this by measuring a length of about two thirds of the short toothed pulling comb and then use the elastic band to secure it. Do this all the way down the mane. To plait comb through the hair and then divide into three sections, plait the hair downward – this will help you when you come to putting it into the knot. When the plait is finished, secure it with an elastic band. Repeat this down the entire mane.

2. When that’s complete then fold the plait up into a knot. This is done by tucking the loose end under and then folding usually about twice. You will be left with a tiny little bun at the end. This is then secured with another band. Look above at the secured Plait

3. When you get to the forelock stand in front of the horses head. Brush the forelock down then take a small piece of hair from the middle and plait it just once, then start working in bits from the outside like you would a French plait. When you get to the bottom and all the hair is included secure it with a band. You then tuck then end under the plait and secure with another band leaving a tidy looking button at the front.
